Today I was singing with a group of 3 year olds, having a great time. I usually adapt my music sessions to whatever the theme is that the teachers might be working on, or else to the holiday of the month, or even to what the weather is doing outside. Then, to conclude my session, I always end with a “Goodbye Song.”
My 30 minute long session was just about over and it was time to sing my “Goodbye Song.” All of the children were happily accompanying me on various percussion instruments when I began singing, “It’s time to say goodbye….” Suddenly one of my students burst into tears. She was playing a drum and tears were streaming down her cheeks. Before I could end the song, her tears had turned into sobs! I stopped the song and asked her what was the matter. She looked at me through streams of tears and choked out, “I don’t want you to stop Miss Fern! Please don’t leave. I don’t want it to be over.”
Children are so good at letting you know exactly how they feel. I felt so loved at that moment–and so appreciated! I gave her a hug and assured her that I would be coming back again soon! I then told her that she has such a beautiful smile, and I asked her to show me her big smile. It worked! I received the biggest smile and then a lovely hug!
