I was working with one of my young piano students who is only 6 years old. I had just explained to him that the goal to playing the piano well, is not just playing fast, but rather, playing with feeling and learning how to count the time signature. He looked at me and said, “I will probably start playing fast again once I figure out exactly how these dotted half notes work, BUT, when the songs start really getting harder, I’m sure I will be slowing down. You know, it’s sort of like friction. Something is holding you back from going really fast!”
This little boy is quite the thinker!
