Being the first day of October, it is the time of year I bring out all of my Halloween Songs and teach them to the children. I know alot of Halloween songs, some that I’ve known forever and others that I have written myself.
While singing this morning I introduced “The Bat Song.” After giving the children a riddle all about bats, and once they had figured out I was talking about bats, I sang “The Bat Song.” Just before starting with the song, I asked all of the children to stand up because I was going to turn all of them into bats so they could properly perform the song. We then sang the song, pretended to be bats, and then everyone sat back down.
I noticed one little 3 year old girl looking quite concerned, with her hand raised up and looking at me intently. I asked her if she had a question. She shook her head yes and then very softly said to me, “Miss Fern, am I still a little girl? I don’t want to stay being a bat!”
I assured her she was indeed still a little girl and that turning her into a bat was “make believe.” Her comment kept me smiling all day long!
