February 8, 2012—Happy Valentine’s Day!
Today I was at one of my preschools sharing Valentine fingerplays, dancing with ribbons to love songs, and learning how to say “I Love You” in sign language. We decided that it is a lot of fun to make valentines for the people we love, and sometimes the best valentine of all is simply a great, big hug. My colleague, Cheryl Waddell, and I would like to share this special valentine poem, touching every parent’s heart.
Mommy and Daddy’s Valentines
Mommy and Daddy, I worked so hard
To make you both a Valentine’s card.
I glued each heart in its own special place,
Then I trimmed each one with pretty white lace.
But the glue is gooey—it will not dry,
And the bows I stuck on just came untied.
I printed my name, but it can’t be read—
It looks like a funny squiggle instead.
Mommy and Daddy, I love you so,
Mommy and Daddy, I want you to know
I’m so happy you are both mine—
Mommy and Daddy, be my valentine.
If I had a dollar or a little bit more,
I’d buy big valentines at the corner store.
But my pockets are empty, my piggy bank, too—
So these are the cards I’m giving to you.
When you take them from my tiny hand,
I hope that you will understand—
It may not be a work of art,
But Mommy and Daddy, it comes straight from my heart.
Mommy and Daddy, I love you so,
Mommy and Daddy, I want you to know
I’m so happy you are both mine—
Mommy and Daddy, be my valentine.
