May 23, 2012—Happy Memorial Day!
Many people think of Memorial Day Weekend as the “kick-off” to summer. Indeed it is. Pools open up, parks welcome families for picnics and parades can be found everywhere. I am full of memories from my childhood of all the various parades I walked in, marched in, or performed at various memorial services for our fallen soldiers. As a child I loved placing pretty, red flowers on the graves of service men & women, enjoying the sight of the waving flags beside their headstones.
I’ve been asking my various students what their plans are for the upcoming weekend. I’ve heard many things including, marching in the parade because I’m in the 4-H, T-Ball, Marching Band, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, etc. I think it is a wonderful, family weekend, where parents and children spend time together remembering how fortunate we are to live in America.
My Dad and Father-in-law are both Vets from World War II, along with several of my Uncles and Aunts. I have relatives who served in the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, and I have friends who are currently serving in Afghanistan. I am very proud of their service to our country and to me. I say “to me” because they really have served me by protecting our country, allowing me to live the life of freedom I enjoy.
So, thank you! Thank you to every single person who has fought for our country and for those who continue to do so today. I am forever grateful. Enjoy your three day summer weekend and all the parades that go with it. Have a fabulous time together and enjoy your freedom in the sun!
