June 27, 2012—Happy 4th of July!
One week from today will be America’s birthday—the 4th of July! That will be a vacation day for all of us here in the USA, including me, so there will not be a blog post next week. Therefore, I wanted to be sure and talk about my personal July 4th celebration today.
I love the 4th of July celebrations because of the fireworks as well as the picnics everyone shares with their families. Here in my town the symphony sets up shop for the summer for the Talcott Mountain Music Festival. Each weekend for a month the symphony plays and people from near and far show up, spreading their blankets on the lawn enjoying friends, food and fine music. It is a delightful time. However, of all the concerts the symphony performs, I enjoy the July 4th patriotic performance the best. Sitting out on the lawn, listening to the patriotic tunes and finally enjoying the fireworks blasting into the night is my favorite summer activity.
I send out a heartfelt thank you to all the service men and women who have fought and continue to fight for the freedom we all enjoy. I think of them while I am enjoying the fireworks. Hearing the booms and bangs of the fireworks display is fun, but when you consider how those similar sounds must be for those under fire, hiding in a foxhole, the event takes on a whole new meaning. I have never been afraid to walk down my street. I’ve spent my entire life enjoying the freedom of shopping where I please, expressing my opinions, and traveling wherever I choose to go. We are blessed to live here in the United States of America. When I look into the face of my father, who served in World War II, I am filled with appreciation and gratitude. He has told me stories of some of his good friends who lost their lives serving and protecting our country. It is impossible, in my opinion, to say thank you enough times.
Suffice it to say, during my upcoming 4th of July celebrations while I am breathing in the fresh air, enjoying the music and watching the fireworks, I will be thinking grateful thoughts, as I have each year in the past and will continue to do for many years to come. Happy Birthday America!
