July 18, 2012—The Solar Storm & The Northern Lights!
On Monday, July 16th around 3:30 a.m., people around the world from Canada to the northern tier of the United States, to Scotland, Hungary and even from New Zealand, Tasmania and the South Pole, were gifted with a performance of the auroral lights caused by a solar storm that passed by the Earth. The pictures that photographers shared from many locations here on our planet were absolutely stunning. According to an article written by Alan Boyle, “the sun is heading toward the high point of its 11-year-cycle, with the maximum expected next year.” That means we can expect more gorgeous art performances from the cosmos in the upcoming months.
The photographs posted on the internet of this amazing event totally impressed me. As I’ve stated in past blogs, I have always been intrigued by the weather and the universe. As I stared at the images, it brought to mind my song, “The Sparkly Stars.” With such beauty and intense magnitude, it is nearly impossible to believe other beings are not living out there, somewhere. Did you ever wonder who else might be enjoying the auroral lights display from other vantage points in the universe? I did. I am wondering.
While you and I are wondering, this time of cosmic art displays is perfect to share with your children. Show them the pictures streaming across the internet. Give them paper, paint and crayons to draw their own images and encourage them to consider what the universe has to offer—and while you are at it, put on my song, “The Sparkly Stars.” Mixing music and art will turn on your kids’ creativity and imaginations and will help them understand, on some level, just how tiny our planet Earth is within our magnificent universe.
