I find myself sitting here at my computer at the end of a very long day. I have the windows open and I can hear the crickets and tree frogs singing their chorus out in the darkness of the night. It is a peaceful sound to me. I grew up in the country hills of the Berkshires in Massachusetts. Listening to the nighttime sounds after the sun has set brings deep peace to my soul. Being awakened at 2:00 a.m. to the sound of an owl hooting makes me smile, or hearing a whippoorwill singing in the evening dusk is just gorgeous and thrilling to my ears.
With all the noise of the modern world today, I wonder how many people are still taking some time to turn off the television, turn off the radio, put down the cell phones, turn of the computer and then walk outside, just to sit down in the cool of the evening and listen. Listen to nature’s music. It is strikingly beautiful.
Of course, if you live in a city, the sounds of nature cannot be heard above the din of the bustling traffic. When my son was just 7-years-old, we moved from our country farm to a home that was still in the country, but not on a farm. He missed it so much and would comment about wishing he could hear the whippoorwill again. I decided it was important for all children to have their ears tickled by the sound of the owls, crickets and whippoorwills of the world, no matter where they lived. So I wrote the song “Nighttime.” It is track 2 on my “Kids! Off To Dreamland With Fern!” CD. It features a little piece of our country farm after the sun has set, when the busy sounds of the day stop and the peaceful chorus of nature sings us to sleep.
If you want to relax at the end of a very stressful day, I suggest you turn off the electronics and step outside to allow nature to calm your nerves. If nature isn’t right outside your doorstep, turn the lights down low and listen to my song “Night Time.” It will be a peaceful conclusion to your day.
