October 24, 2012—Orionid Meteor Shower
Last weekend, on Sunday morning of October 21st, the Orionid Meteor Shower peaked. The Orionids meteors originated in Comet Halley—the most famous of all comets. The last time it came close to Earth was in 1986. The Comet left behind debris—little bits of ice, dust and rubble—and those struck the Earth’s atmosphere around October 20-22. It is easiest to see the meteor shower from midnight to dawn, but specifically between the hours of 2:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m.
Knowing the Orionid Meteor Shower was putting on a show last Sunday night, I went outside around midnight and just stood there in the dark, watching the southern sky. I was earlier than I should have been for the perfect viewing time, but I wasn’t keen on the idea of sitting up until 2:00 a.m. I was hoping that midnight was close enough to see something. I was not disappointed. After standing outside gazing up at our amazing universe, there it was–a beautiful, bright shooting star, leaving a streak of light through the dark. My husband and I both saw it and were amazed at how brilliant and awesome it was.
Being a person who has written an entire CD about space for young children, (Fern, the Stars and the Planets), I found my imagination taking over. I thought of all the songs on my CD including “The Sparkly Stars” all about wondering what is out there among the sparkly stars, “Handyman From Outer Space” which is about a little alien who cleans up the whole outer space and then takes a meteor shower, “Carousel In The Sky” which is about our planets being a merry-go-round around the sun, to “The Galactic Hop Bop”, where I introduce 4 little aliens, Beezer, Tweezer, Snooze and Lop, who zip through the universe, spin around Saturn, dodge asteroids and have loads of fun doing the Galactic Hop Bop on their spaceship.
I could stand outside and watch the nighttime sky twinkling back at me for endless hours. When I contemplate the universe I realize how tiny our Earth is in the large scheme of things. I wonder what must be out there, very far away, deep in outer space. Let’s spark our children’s imaginations and get them interested in space exploration. Let’s ponder the idea of possibly meeting other beings and greeting them with love and kindness. My CD is all about celebrating cultural diversity on an intergalactic scale, delivering musical messages about living in harmony and peace with our fellow inhabitants. In my opinion, other beings must be out there. This CD is the perfect addition to any parent or teachers collection to inspire children about outer space! Keep your eyes on YouTube; soon you will meet my aliens in the Galactic Hop Bop!
