January 4, 2013—Happy New Year!
Yesterday the children from Newtown, CT headed back to school. These children and teachers are moving on and they are brave to do so. Ann Curry suggested a couple of weeks ago to consider doing 26 Acts of Kindness in memory of everyone who lost their lives at Sandy Hook. What a wonderful suggestion and thousands of people agreed to do it.
I love the idea of being challenged to be kind to one another. I think that should be our New Year’s Resolution for 2013. This sort of thinking should become part of our daily lives, not just brought on by disaster. Let’s carry out Ann Curry’s suggestion every single month of this year. It might sound like a lot, but not if you break it down and take a minute to think of very simple ways we can all be kind to each other. Consider these simple suggestions:
- Holding the door for someone
- Smiling at the clerk serving your morning coffee and saying “Good Morning!”
- Hug your family when you leave and when you come home—every day!
- Bring in a treat for your co-workers some morning.
- Offer a compliment for the grocery store clerk who does a great job.
- Notice the name tag of a clerk and mention their name when you speak to them.
- If you see an elderly person drop something, pick it up for them.
- When you notice a young child walking with an adult, take a second to smile at them.
- If someone in front of you in line is short on change, give them the extra.
- Call your neighbor just to say “Hi!”
- Put a smiley face note in your child’s lunchbox with a heart on it.
All of these little things can make a big difference. Being kind doesn’t have to cost money, it’s about sharing love. This year let’s slow down our fast pace and take a few minutes to focus on others.
That will be my New Year’s Resolution. Happy New Year! 2013 is going to rock.
