July 24, 2013—Congratulations on the birth of the new little Prince!
As everyone knows, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have just welcomed their new little prince into the world. I am very happy for them on the birth of their new baby boy, but royal or not, this newborn has something in common with other babies—he will be cherished!
All of this baby excitement got me thinking back to when my first child was born. I remember the baby showers, gifts of love and kindness from my family and friends, and all of the “baby paraphernalia” that was added to my household. Whether a baby is moving into a castle or a cottage, the nursery is set up with great anticipation, preparing for the new arrival. That led me to ask the following:
What do you think is the most important item any nursery should have?
We all think of the usual necessities:
- A crib or bassinette
- A changing table
- A car seat
- Diapers, clothing and food
- Stuffed animals and Blankets
Certainly all of the above are important and are required for the baby’s safety and basic needs.
However, in my opinion, the most important item that should have center stage in any nursery is the rocking chair. Here, in this special spot, mother and baby bond, sharing a love unlike any other. Whether feeding, soothing or simply relaxing, the rocking chair filled with mother and child holds a place of honor. Just thinking of this and remembering times past with my own children covers my body with goose bumps and makes my heart throb with joy.
The rocking chair with mother and child is sacred. It is the perfect expression of love, safety and peace, teaching a newborn to trust. Welcome little Prince and all the other newborns in our world. May your early days be filled with hugs and rocking chairs!
