November 14, 2013—What is your favorite Christmas book?

I woke up this morning and heard the radio announcer say, “It’s only 6 weeks until Christmas!” It hit me like a rock!  Really?? The Holiday season has crept up on me this year. For reasons I have not yet figured out, I am still feeling like it is September. However, this morning reality hit me. It’s true. Thanksgiving is 2 weeks from today and Christmas is only 6 weeks away. That got me thinking about how much I love the Holidays and what my favorite Christmas books are. Here is my personal list:

  1. The Polar Express (Caldecott Medal Winner) Author: Chris Van Allsburg www.amazon.com  (5 Star Rated)
  2. The Night Before Christmas Author: Clement Clarke Moore www.amazon.com (5 Star Rated)
  3. The Christmas Story Author: Jane Werner Watson www.amazon.com (4 ½ Star Rated)
  4. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer Author: Rick Bunsen www.amazon.com (4 ½ Star Rated)
  5. How the Grinch Stole Christmas Author: Dr. Seuss www.amazon.com (5 Star Rated)

There are 2 new Christmas books on the market this year and I believe they will become classics.

  1. The First Christmas Night Author: Keith Christopher, Illustrated by: Christine Kornacki. This book has gorgeous illustrations and is a lyrical retelling of the birth of Jesus, modeled after the classic “Twas the Night Before Christmas.” This book beautifully explains the true reason for the season. www.amazon.com (5 Star Rated)
  2. Rockrhydin Author: Cheryl Elizabeth Waddell, Illustrated by: Janice Prey Wolfe. As in the previous book, the illustrations are beautiful. The story is about a little boy and his rocking horse who get separated and discover Christmas wishes haven’t any “nevers.” It touches the hearts of children and adults with its portrayal of friendship, family, and the transforming power of love. As we all know, love is the core of what Christmas is all about. This book also has a theme song. www.amazon.com  (5 Star Rated) and www.fernsmusicforkids.com  Theme song link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jiyNX60AgsM

As this Holiday season begins, take time to sit down with your children and read these wonderful stories that will remain in their hearts and memories for the rest of their lives. It will make Christmas special for your family as you share the gift of reading together.
