As a Pre-School Music and Early Childhood Education Expert, I am always on the look-out for wholesome, quality books and music that teach positive values to children. I have found one! I highly recommend “The Legend of RANGER The Reindeer Who Couldn’t Fly” by Alan B. Salisbury. www.opusonestudios.com This book has an accompanying theme song “Dream and Believe” and a little plush RANGER reindeer that children can hug and love!
On the surface, this book with its adorable illustrations demonstrates the all-important value that if you believe in yourself, there will be no limit to what you can accomplish. This is a critically important point to make to our children, starting in the pre-school years. If a child is consistently told they can be whatever they want to be, the sky’s the limit. Ranger found this out!
However, when looking deeper into this Christmas story, I see an even greater message. Yes—definitely believe in yourself and dream big, but to me, the real message is that when you do something you are nervous about or are afraid to do because you are helping others, we obtain real strength. I see the message as the power of unselfish love.
Dreaming big and believing in yourself is critical—but the power of unselfish love enables anyone, no matter how big or small, to do heroic things!
As an educator and a mom, I suggest:
1. Teach your children to always TRY!
2. Encourage them to believe in themselves and to think for themselves.
3. Tell them to be true to themselves and follow their dreams—the bigger the better! Self-Esteem is critical.
4. And most of all—SHOW them how to be unselfish and how to think of others.
Offering your children books, music and examples of all the above suggestions, you will be giving them the best gift of all—the ability to make a positive difference in the world, each in their own special, unique way.
