September 11, 2014—In Remembrance of those lost on 9/11.
Today is the 13th anniversary of a terrible attack on our country. We all remember where we were that horrible day. We watched, we cried, we shook our heads in disbelief and we prayed. I awoke this morning to a beautiful song playing on the radio in remembrance of a little girl’s Dad who was lost at the Twin Towers on that fateful day. I found myself thinking about what each of us could do to honor those loved ones who died on 9/11. I think the best answer is a very simple one—spread kindness. Each time we think of one person who was lost, reach out and do something kind for another person in their honor. If everyone does this we will overcome the evil of that moment. Love always wins.
The preschool children in our lives were not among us when this happened. However, they will hear about it today and for years to come. When the kids hear about this today, perhaps parents could turn a terrible memory into a positive effort. Here are two suggestions:
- Ask your children if they can think of a nice thing to do for a friend.
- Make paper hand prints and have your children write down a kindness they have done each day on their hand prints. Then post those happy hand prints around the house. It will lift their spirits to read all of the wonderful things they have done for others.
It does not seem like much, but when put together and carried out by people everywhere, these simple acts of kindness will improve our world and make it a better place to live. That is what we want to teach our children, kindness, forgiveness and love.
